Lisbon Information
Lisbon, also known as the city of the seven hills, is open to the Tejo River and is spiced by a temperate weather. It's a historic capital, a medley of character and charm, a city of contrasts mingling modern trends and life styles with 800 years of cultural influences. The name Lisbon comes from 'Olissipo', which is originated from the Phoenician words 'Allis Ubbo' meaning 'enchanting port' and legend has it that Lisbon was founded by Ulysses. Lisbon was most probably founded by the Phoenicians, being after conquered by the Moors. The influence of this culture can be seen in several buildings and in several portuguese words. the city was re-conquered by the Christians in the 12th century, after almost 450 years of Moors ruling, and by the middle of the 13th century Lisbon became the country's capital. Lisbon was the starting point of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries. The highest point of Portuguese discoveries came in 1498 when the sea route to India was discovered by Vasco da Gama. the city was one of the most relevant spice and jewellery trade centre. The architecture from this golden era, called Manueline named after King Manuel I, was based in maritime motifs and can be observed in several monuments such as Belém Tower or the Jerónimos Monastery. Lisbon grew over the centuries and was almost completely destroyed in 1755 by and earthquake followed by a tsunami. Lisbon was rebuilt by Marquês de Pombal, the resposible for the Baixa Pombalina, and suffered few changes since. More information on Lisbon available at Turismo de Lisboa.
